What Is A Doula

Giving birth is an essential part of the human experience. This event demands energy that tests the physical, emotional and mental strengths of a mother and impacts the entire family thereafter.

Today’s birth Doula is one who nurtures, supports and strengthens a mother as she yields to her own unique birthing experience. Experiencing uncertainties about labor and birth itself, especially a first birth, can be overwhelming for many. Talking together with their Doula, a mother and her partner can discuss questions and concerns.
A Doula is not a replacement for a partner but is an additional resource to provide encouragement, experience, comfort measures and unconditional support. Giving birth presents a woman with unique emotional needs as well as all the physical ones. The work of a Doula is supportive, thus fostering the bond between both partners and their baby. These measures aid the mother in achieving her own rituals and strengths and are empowering. With A Doula as their guide and support, both the mother and her partner continue their efforts and their baby arrives in an atmosphere of joy and gratitude.

Is A Cesarean Birth the ONLY Option?

EVERY 30 seconds in the USA, a Cesarean birth is performed. Life is about options, and giving birth is no exception.
Note: See "The Emotional Impact of Cesareans " by Pam Udy: 2009 Midwifery Today Issue 89
If you would like to avoid this surgical birth, you as a mother can make preparations to improve your baby's labor and birthing position.
Ideally, from 34 weeks on, the occipitut anterior (O.A.) position, head down, baby facing your back, is optimal. Until this time, your baby can turn and adjust herself multiple times, in preparation for being born. The good news is that YOU can help with this optimal foetal positioning and encourage your baby to take an anterior position by making sure that your knees are always LOWER than your hips.
Posterior Babies:
Some excellent additional pointers can be found at http://www.babycentre.co.uk/ and http://www.babyworld.co.uk/. and http://www.gentlebirth.org/.
Included are some signs mothers can watch for of a posterior baby, as well as a wealth of coping measures .

Breech Babies:
Prior to the 32nd week of pregnancy, the incidence of breech presentations can be as high as 50%.The majority of these spontaneously convert to the vortex position. Here again, YOU as the mother can be influential. While most obstetricians prefer to perform a cesarean proceedure for this baby, alternate options are available. The following sources offer various methods to impact your baby's birth outcome.
note: As always, seek your birth care provider's judgement and do your research!
